Why The Mummy?

Universal’s 1999 remake of The Mummy is, to this day, one of my all-time favorite films. They were able to take the classic Universal monster and remake it for the modern audience with humor, action, and drama while still paying homage to Boris Karloff’s original concept. But it was the 1999 remake that gave a whole new view of not only the classic monster, but also this reimagined genre that captivated audiences worldwide. To this day, I can still quote this film line by line, remembering every fantastic moment, element, and design.

"No harm came from reading a book..."

The catalysts of this film that start the journey are the Book of the Dead and the Key of Hamunaptra. For this look, I wanted to create the book itself as it is one of my all-time favorite movie props. The dress is faux leather with an added texture, mimicking the stone of the actual book with screen-printed pages of the book along the train. Hieroglyphics accented in black crystals will adorn sheer elements. These are direct copies of what is written in the Book of the Dead from the film, representing the Hom-Dai. The lining is a custom-printed gold fabric, featuring the inscriptions of the Book of the Living.

Just like with Wanda and Alastor, I love to hide details throughout the looks I make. The gold leather accents that run throughout the bodice and the top of the skirt are actually filled with some of the most iconic quotes of the film.
