What Is Hazbin Hotel?
Hazbin Hotel, the acclaimed Amazon Prime animated musical, is one of the most unique experiences you can have with a piece of animation in recent years. Following along the journey of redemption for the sinners in Hell, you are brought into a world with Broadway-level performances and a story that keeps you guessing until the finale.
Debut: The HerUniverse Fashion Show 2024
As I have been following, what fans refer to as the ‘Hellaverse’, since 2019 with the launch of the pilot on YouTube, this has been one of my favorite series to date. When I was given the chance to design something off this series, I had to go with Alastor, who is my favorite character in the show.
Alastor, also known as “The Radio Demon”, is an incredibly powerful overlord in Hell. He always wears a smile, while his voice mimics the sound of being broadcasted through an old-timey radio. For this look, I was influenced by the styles of the late 1920s/early 1930s while spinning them into a more modern take.
One of my favorite parts of this design is the accessories and Easter Eggs. Pulling from his deer accents, as he was killed by a hunter mistaking him for a deer, I wanted to do small nods to this throughout. A 3D printed a necklace made to look like deer antlers with a red stone accent in the middle, a custome set of heels with antler accents (with the hoof prints on the bottom as well!) Finally, any good radio host should not be without a custom-made ‘On Air’ sign purse. This will be 3D printed and then finished to mimic an actual sign, lighting included.
But my personal favorite touch were the easter eggs to the show throughout. I always love to hide little details that people may or may not see. Using Morse Code, I translated all of Alastor's lyrics in Stays Gone into a custom lining. Meanwhile, the skirt has crystals placed throughout in the same Morse Code technique, that were all quotes from Season One, as well as the pilot episode.
Some quotes included: "Ugh! Susan." "Smile my dear! You know your never fully dresses without one!", "A smiel is a valuable tool my dear", and "So many orphans."
Lastly: the lighting. Similar to Wanda, I wanted to incorperate a lighting reveal into this look. As Alastor is infamous for making deals, I wanted the radio bodice dials to turn and change from the amber color to the menacing green. Not only that, but with some very cleaver programming from my partner, we were able to have the lighting travel through the tails and reveal all the symbols he using when making his deal. It was probably my favorite detail I ever made for a look.
